Board games are a fantastic way to connect with your children and enjoy quality family time. Finding age-appropriate games has been a rewarding journey, and now I’m excited to share a list of games that have been perfect for our family.
6-7 years old (6-7歳)
These board games have it all—from American classics to awesome hidden gems. As kids get older, more games become enjoyable and they can really hold their own, and honestly, sometimes the adults end up being way more into it. If there’s a big skill gap between parents, kids, or siblings, tweaking the rules a bit can make sure everyone’s having a great time.
これらのボードゲームは、アメリカのクラシックなものから、隠れた名作まで多彩にそろっています。子供が成長するにつれ、大人と対等に楽しめるゲームも増え、むしろ大人の方が夢中になることも珍しくありません。親子間や年齢の離れた兄弟間で差が出てしまう場合には、ルールをアレンジするなどして、家族全員が楽しめる環境を作ることもできるようになってきます。

It’s a super simple game you can enjoy one-on-one, kind of like Connect 4. The idea is to take turns dropping bombs and try to sink your opponent’s battleship. It’s more about having fun while relaxing than being strategic, so it’s great for chilling out with kids. Since you play by talking through the moves, it’s perfect for kids around 5 and up.
Connect４のように、1対1で楽しめるシンプルなゲーム。ルールは、順番に爆弾を落としながら、相手の戦闘船を撃沈することを目指す。戦略性よりも気軽さを重視した内容なので、あまり考えずに、リラックスして子供と一緒に遊ぶのに最適なゲーム。言葉による正確なコミュニケーションだけでゲームを進行するので、5歳以上ぐらいの子供に向いている。

This game is especially fun for kids interested in maps and trains. It heavily relies on luck and less on strategy, it might feel a bit lacking for adults.
アメリカのクラシックなボードゲーム「Ticket to Ride」の子供向けバージョン。大人向けと比べてルールが簡単で、アメリカの地図を楽しく学ぶことができる。地図や電車に興味のある子供にはおすすめのゲーム。運の要素が大きく、戦略性はあまり必要ないため、大人には少し物足りなく感じるかもしれないが、子供たちが勝敗を気にせずリラックスして楽しめる。

This game is all about spotting stuff on the card—either matching objects or ones that aren’t there at all. It’s fast-paced and needs sharp reflexes, so it can feel pretty competitive between people who are really good and those who aren’t as quick. It is similar to the game, Spot it!, where you gotta make snap decisions.
カードを見て、カード上のオブジェクトと同じものや全く無いものを素早く見つけるゲーム。判断力と反射神経が必要になってくるので、得意な人と不得意な人で差が出やすいゲームでもある。ゲームの種類としては、瞬間的な判断が求められる点でSpot it! と似ている。

In this game, you use four colored blocks to grow your territory. Kids have a solid shot at winning as luck is a big factor. When you play with three or more people, things get even more unpredictable—which both adults and kids love! If the game feels tricky to learn at first, just use three colors instead of four, which often ends in a tie, to learn the rules first.
４色のブロックを使って領域を広げていくゲーム。スピードを必要とせず、運の要素が大きいため、小さな子供でも勝てる可能性が大きい。２人よりも３人以上で遊ぶ方が予測がつかず、子供たちにとっては特に面白くなる。もしゲームが難しいと感じる場合、４色全てを使わずに３色で遊ぶと、同点で終わることが多く、勝敗にこだわらず、楽しみながらルールを覚えることができる。
8-9 years old (8-9 歳)
At this age, kids get pretty good at reading, writing, and basic math, so they can play most board games aimed at adults. That said, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, so it’s important to pick games that match their personality and preferences. There are still tons of board games that suit this age group, but for now, I’ll share a few that our family enjoys regularly.
この年齢になると、文字の読み書きや計算がスムーズになり、大人向けのボードゲームはほぼ一緒に遊べるようになります。ただし、ゲームにはそれぞれ得意・不得意があるので、個々の性格や好みに合ったゲームを選ぶのがポイントです。この年齢に適したボードゲームはまだまだたくさんありますが、今回は我が家で普段から楽しんでいるゲームをいくつかご紹介します。

Monopoly involves bankrupting your opponents, which can be tough for kids who aren’t used to losing. For the first couple of rounds, it might be good to team up with the kids so they can build confidence. As parents, you might hesitate to bankrupt your child, but as the rules say, “No family rule. Keep it quick and sweet,” so sometimes, dragging can actually make things worse. The latest version includes a “Money Grab” Chance card, where $100 bills are scattered, giving the losing player a shot at a big comeback.
日本でもお馴染みのモノポリー。相手を倒産に追い込むことが目的なので、負けることに慣れていない子どもだと、心が折れてしまうこともあり。最初の2～3回は、大人と子どもが同じチームでプレイし、少しずつ自信をつけると良いかも。親心で子どもを倒産に追い込むのを躊躇してしまうかもしれないが、ルールに「No family rule. Keep it quick and sweet」と書かれている通り、逆に苦しいゲームが長引くこともあり。最新バージョンには「Money Grab」という100ドル札をばら撒くChanceカードがあり、負けている人が大逆転を狙うことができる。

It’s a fun game where you use coins to collect cards with jewels on them, and the first to hit 15 points wins. You can use the cards in your hands as credit, so the trick is figuring out the best way to stack up points using cards. It’s simple to play but keeps things interesting with the strategy. Plus, the game has a classy vibe with its sturdy box, chunky coins, and sleek card designs—it feels like you are a real jeweler.
宝石が描かれたカードをコインで集め、先に合計15点に達した方が勝つゲーム。集めたカードはコインのように使えるだけでなく、カード自体はクレジットのように活用できるため、いかに効率よくカードを集めて得点を重ねるかが重要な戦略となる。シンプルながら、戦略を考える楽しさがある。ゲームは、分厚い箱に重みのあるコイン、おしゃれな絵柄が施されたカードなど、まるで宝石商のような雰囲気を味わえるのも大きなプラス。

Wingspan is a fun, bird-themed game where players arrange bird cards in habitats. It’s easy to learn, but each bird card comes with descriptions and instructions, making the game a bit complex and requiring some time to get used to. The artwork and the game’s design are really beautiful, and since we don’t know scores til the end, it keeps kids engaged. As the game progresses, it becomes more about enjoying learning birds and collecting them than winning. While adults might find the strategy a bit simple, it’s an ideal game for bird enthusiasts.
170種類の鳥をテーマにしたボードゲームで、各鳥のカードをHabitat（生息地）に並べていくゲーム。各鳥のカードには説明や指示があるため少し複雑で、慣れるには時間がかかるが、鳥カードの美しいイラストや詳細な説明、卵や鳥の巣のパーツなど、デザインの素晴らしさが魅力。ゲームの進行中は得点がわからないため、子供たちは途中で負けに気づいてもやる気を失うことが少ない。また、ゲームが進むにつれて勝敗がどうでも良くなるほどの楽しさがある。大人にとっては、戦略性がやや少ないため満足度が若干低い可能性も。ただし、鳥について学びながら進行するため、鳥好きな人にとっては最高のゲーム。

カスカディアというバイオリージョンに住む動物たちを使って生息地を広げていくボードゲーム。エコシステムや環境学、動物学、バイオに興味がある人にとっては、非常に面白い。ゲームの終わりに点数が付けられるまで勝敗がわからないため、途中でやる気を失うことなく楽しめる。また、作っていく生息地にはいくつかのパターンがあり、子供の年齢やスキルに応じて、簡単なものから難しいものまでゲームの難易度を微調整できる点が魅力。

「日本のまちづくり」をテーマにしたこのゲームでは、プレイヤーが市長となり、サイコロの目によって商業施設や工場、森などを拡張し、収益を上げていく。ゲームの難易度は簡単なアレンジによって調整できるため、プレイヤーは徐々に慣れていくことができ、また自分の好みに合わせてルールを変更することも可能。戦略的な要素も多く、お金を得る瞬間の達成感も大人でもつい夢中になってしまうような魅力的なゲーム。
